Jeff Pierce and his wife commissioned some new music with another local couple last summer. It is by a composer named Kevin Puts and had its world premiere last weekend with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. It is a fantastic piece named “Concerto for Orchestra – Hymn for the Hurting.” When Kevin sat down to begin the piece he thought of a poem he had recently read called Hymn for the Hurting by Amanda Gorman. This poem was written after the Uvalde shootings. This inspiration resulted in the beautiful hymn-like phrase to begin this 6 movement work that repeats during future movements. There is an unreal 3 drum set percussion segment in the piece along with a music box movement with a harp and glockenspiel. A highlight is an unbelievably beautiful slow movement second from the end that starts with the piano. The piece ends in true virtuosic fashion showing off the various sections/choirs of the orchestra and brought the audience to their feet.
Deb and Jeff feel blessed to have commissioned this piece and to have had the opportunity to get to know this down to earth, brilliant man. They feel that this may join works like Appalachian Spring that are part of the contemporary standard repertoire. If it does, their names on the score will long outlive our time on this planet.
